Chapter 5

A night in Siem Reap

Posted by Temujin on March 12, 2008

I got up early on Monday (10 March) to catch an early bus from Battambang to Siem Reap. A bit sleepless. A bit sick. Then I got up even earlier on Tuesday (11 March) to get an earliy flight from Siem Reap to Singapore. A bit more sleepless. A bit more sick. This morning I woke up in pain and seriously suggested going to hospital… though I feel a bit better now.

After a good week in Battambang, going to Siem Reap was a disapointing farewell to Cambodia. While Siem Reap has it’s virtues, it also has all the vices that comes with being a major tourist town. More aggressive and less friendly touts and beggars. Fewer people smiling. More expensive rooms. And to make it even better, I got ripped off $30 at the airport as I left the country.

The one redeeming feature was that I finally got a massage from “seeing hands” — which employs well trained blind workers. Nice guys. Good massage. $5.

I’m now back in Singapore, staying with Ashley. Last night we managed to solve two important problems in the world — what’s happening with the US liquidity crisis, and whether god exists. My plan for now is to get better, do a bit of work, and then on Monday I get a flight over to Abu Dhabi.

Could be malaria - it’s in the Cambodian countryside. Better get checked.
